September 2026 retrospective
Oklahoma’s amended 2024 construction codes took effect September 14, 2026. The Construction Industries Board identifies the affected editions as the International Building, Residential, Mechanical, Plumbing and Fuel Gas codes. Its announcement was published August 31 and updated September 2.
Builders with work moving through State Fire Marshal review should also check that office’s transition policy. The office says it will accept qualifying plans designed or bid/bonded during 2026 under the 2018 codes until March 14, 2027. Reviewers may ask for evidence of the bid or bond.
What project teams should check
That makes documentation important on projects whose design began before the code change. The Fire Marshal directs applicants to identify code references consistently on plan sheets and compliance letters, and to use the appropriate NFPA standards for deferred fire-alarm or sprinkler submissions.
A useful next step is to review the code sheet with the architect, engineers and fire-protection team before the next upload. If the project is relying on the older-code route, assemble the supporting records and confirm eligibility with the reviewer before carrying the assumption into pricing or construction.
The licensing-examination transition announced by the Construction Industries Board is a separate process with its own dates. It does not establish a general permit grace period. Likewise, the State Fire Marshal’s acceptance policy should be applied to that office’s review; confirm any municipal submission rules directly with the local building department. The Fire Marshal page displays a September 25, 2026 update date, anchoring its reference to plans designed or bid/bonded “this year” to 2026. Confirm your project’s eligibility with the office.
Scope and source dates
The March 14, 2027 policy applies to State Fire Marshal review. It does not establish a municipal permit grace period.
